PROFESSIONS

File Clerk

An administrative worker who organizes, catalogs, and retrieves documents and records in offices and archives.

What file clerks do

File clerks sort, label, and store paper and electronic documents; retrieve files on request; scan paper records into document management systems; and purge or archive files according to retention schedules.

Training path

Most positions require a high school diploma or equivalent and offer on-the-job training. Familiarity with records-management software (such as iManage or Worldox) and scanner workflows is a plus for law and healthcare settings.

Work setting

Employers include law firms, hospitals and medical clinics, county recorder’s offices, federal archives such as NARA, banks, and corporate human-resources departments. Many roles are migrating toward records-scanning and indexing as offices go digital.
