Pokemon Red and Blue

A 1996 pair of role-playing games by Game Freak for the Game Boy that launched the global Pokemon franchise, centered on catching and battling 151 creatures.

Origin

Designed over six years by Satoshi Tajiri, Pokemon Red and Green released in Japan in 1996. The split-version structure - with version-exclusive creatures - encouraged trading via the Game Boy Link Cable, a defining feature of the franchise.

Gameplay

Players assume the role of a young trainer who captures, trains, and battles Pokemon across the fictional Kanto region. The game culminates in challenging the Elite Four and completing the Pokedex.

Legacy

Red and Blue (the Western release) launched a multimedia empire including TV anime, films, trading cards, and dozens of subsequent games. Combined sales for the pair exceed 47 million copies, making them among the best-selling Game Boy titles.
