A triangular Polynesian atoll in the Cook Islands group, ringed by a turquoise lagoon and 15 motu islets.
Geography
Aitutaki lies about 260 km north of Rarotonga in the southern Cook Islands. The main island is a low volcanic remnant inside a triangular barrier reef enclosing a 50 square kilometer lagoon.
Lagoon
Snorkel boats reach the One Foot Island sandbar at the southeastern tip, where visitors can have passports stamped at the islet’s tiny post office. The bonefish flats of the lagoon are world-renowned with fly anglers.
World War II
The United States built an airstrip on Aitutaki during World War II as a staging post on the route from Bora Bora to Fiji. The airstrip still serves modern flights from Rarotonga.
