ISLANDS

Bali

An Indonesian island east of Java, renowned for Hindu temples, volcanic peaks, terraced rice fields, and a long-running global tourism boom.

Geography

Bali lies between Java and Lombok, separated from each by narrow straits. The volcanic Gunung Agung rises to 3031 m on the eastern side and last erupted in 2017 to 2019.

Religion

Bali is the only Hindu-majority province of Indonesia, with about 87 percent of residents practicing Balinese Hinduism. Temple festivals follow both the 210-day pawukon calendar and a separate lunar Saka calendar.

Tourism

Mass international tourism began with the 1970s opening of Ngurah Rai Airport at Tuban. Today Bali hosts more than five million foreign visitors annually, concentrated in Kuta, Seminyak, Ubud, and Canggu.
