A rocky Danish island in the southern Baltic Sea, geologically and culturally distinct from the rest of Denmark, known for round churches and smoked herring.
Geography
Bornholm lies about 135 km east of Copenhagen, closer to Sweden and Poland than to mainland Denmark. The bedrock is Precambrian granite, in contrast to the chalk and sand of the rest of the country.
Round Churches
Four 12th-century round churches at Osterlars, Olsker, Nylars, and Nyker were built as fortified Christian sanctuaries against Baltic pirates. The walls are typically over two meters thick.
Smoked Herring
The local Bornholmer rogeri smokehouses cure herring over alder wood. The brick chimneys of the smokehouses, particularly in Allinge and Gudhjem, are among the island’s most recognizable landmarks.
