The world's third-largest island, divided between Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei, covered by some of the oldest rainforest on Earth.
Geography
Borneo is split among Indonesian Kalimantan (about 73 percent), Malaysian Sabah and Sarawak (26 percent), and Brunei (1 percent). Mount Kinabalu in Sabah rises to 4095 m, the highest peak between the Himalayas and New Guinea.
Rainforest
The Borneo lowland rainforest is among the most biodiverse on Earth and may be over 130 million years old. The island hosts orangutans, proboscis monkeys, clouded leopards, and the Rafflesia, the world’s largest flower.
Logging
Borneo’s forest cover dropped from about 75 percent in 1985 to roughly 50 percent by 2020 because of timber and palm oil expansion, threatening species such as the Bornean orangutan with extinction.
