Government
Taiwan has been governed by the Republic of China since 1945 and effectively split from mainland China after the 1949 civil war. Its democratic government and self-rule are not recognized by most United Nations members.
Indigenous Peoples
Sixteen officially recognized Austronesian indigenous groups inhabit Taiwan, including the Amis, Atayal, and Bunun. Linguists trace the entire Austronesian language family to a Taiwanese origin around 4,000 BCE.
