Curacao (Island)

The largest of the ABC Islands in the southern Caribbean and a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Geography

Curacao lies about 65 km north of Venezuela. The island is largely arid with cactus, scrub, and divi-divi trees shaped by trade winds. Christoffelberg is the highest point at 372 m and lies within a national park in the northwest.

History

Founded by the Dutch in 1634 as a trading post, Willemstad’s historic center features distinctive Dutch colonial architecture painted in vivid pastel colors. The center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Politics

Curacao became a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 2010 when the Netherlands Antilles was dissolved. Papiamentu, Dutch, and English are the official languages.
