The northernmost island of Canada and the world's tenth-largest island, an ice-capped High Arctic landmass with fjords, ice shelves, and muskoxen.
Geography
Ellesmere Island lies north of Greenland across the narrow Nares Strait. Its mountainous spine, the Arctic Cordillera, includes Barbeau Peak at 2616 m, the highest point in eastern North America.
Climate
Roughly a fifth of the island is buried under glaciers and ice caps. Alert, on its northeastern tip, is the northernmost continuously inhabited place on Earth at 82.5 degrees north.
History
The Inuit Thule culture reached Ellesmere from Alaska around 1000 CE but largely abandoned it by the 1700s. Norwegian explorer Otto Sverdrup mapped much of the island during his 1898 to 1902 expedition.
