ISLANDS

Hainan

China's southernmost province and largest tropical island, sometimes called the "Hawaii of China" for its beach resorts and warm climate.

Geography

Hainan sits across the narrow Qiongzhou Strait from the Leizhou Peninsula of mainland Guangdong. The volcanic Wuzhi Mountain range rises in the center, while coastal plains ring most of the island.

Tourism

The southern city of Sanya draws domestic and international visitors to Yalong Bay, Dadonghai, and the Atlantis resort. Hainan is China’s only tropical-climate province and a duty-free shopping destination.

People

Hainan is home to the Li and Miao ethnic minorities concentrated in mountainous interior counties. The Li are believed to have inhabited the island for over 3,000 years.
