ISLANDS

Honshu

The largest and most populous island of Japan, home to Tokyo, Mount Fuji, and roughly 80 percent of the country's population.

Geography

Honshu stretches roughly 1,300 km from northeast to southwest and is the world’s seventh-largest island. The Japanese Alps run down its spine, and Mount Fuji at 3776 m is its highest peak and an active stratovolcano.

Cities

The Tokyo-Yokohama and Osaka-Kobe-Kyoto metropolitan areas on Honshu rank among the world’s most populous urban regions. Tokyo alone hosts over 37 million people in its greater area.

Seismicity

Honshu sits at the convergence of four tectonic plates and experiences frequent earthquakes. The 2011 Tohoku earthquake off its northeast coast triggered the tsunami that struck the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.
