ISLANDS

Kodiak

The largest island of Alaska's Kodiak Archipelago, famed for its giant brown bears and one of the largest U.S. commercial fishing ports.

Geography

Kodiak sits in the Gulf of Alaska, separated from the mainland by the Shelikof Strait. Its terrain is mountainous and deeply fjorded, with about two-thirds of the island lying within the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge.

Wildlife

The Kodiak brown bear, the largest brown bear subspecies, weighs up to 680 kg. About 3,500 individuals roam the archipelago, isolated since the last ice age from mainland populations.

Fisheries

The town of Kodiak hosts one of the busiest commercial fishing fleets in the United States, landing pollock, halibut, salmon, and king crab. Russian settlers founded the first permanent European settlement in Alaska here in 1784.
