Geography
Komodo lies between Sumbawa and Flores in eastern Indonesia and forms part of Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1991. The terrain is dry savanna and tropical scrub forest underlain by volcanic rock.
Komodo Dragon
The Komodo dragon, Varanus komodoensis, can reach 3 m and weigh 90 kg. About 3,000 wild dragons survive across Komodo, Rinca, and a few smaller islands, hunting Timor deer and water buffalo.
Marine Life
The waters around Komodo lie within the Coral Triangle and host over 1,000 species of fish, including manta rays, sharks, and seasonal whale sharks at Banta Island.
