Sweden's second-largest island, a long thin landmass in the Baltic Sea linked to the mainland by the country's longest bridge.
Geography
Oland stretches about 137 km north to south but is only 16 km wide at its broadest point. The Oland Bridge, completed in 1972 at 6 km, connects it to Kalmar on the Swedish mainland.
Stora Alvaret
The Stora Alvaret, an arid limestone plateau covering much of the southern third of the island, is one of Europe’s largest alvar landscapes. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site for its rare lichens and orchids.
Royal Summer
The Swedish royal family spends summers at Solliden Palace, built in 1906 near Borgholm. The medieval Borgholm Castle nearby ranks among Sweden’s most photographed ruins.
