An archipelago of about 70 islands off the north coast of Scotland, rich in Neolithic monuments and Norse heritage.
Geography
Twenty Orkney islands are inhabited; the largest, Mainland, holds the towns of Kirkwall and Stromness. The terrain is low, treeless, and gently rolling, shaped by Old Red Sandstone and constant Atlantic winds.
Neolithic Heritage
The Heart of Neolithic Orkney UNESCO World Heritage site includes Skara Brae, a stone village inhabited from about 3180 BCE, the Ring of Brodgar, and the Maeshowe chambered tomb.
Scapa Flow
The natural harbor of Scapa Flow served as the principal British naval base in both World Wars. The German High Seas Fleet was scuttled there in June 1919 after the Armistice.
