Geography
Xiamen Island sits in Xiamen Bay opposite Taiwan’s Quemoy. Four causeways and bridges link it to the Fujian mainland. The hilly terrain is dominated by Wulao Peak at 339 m.
Gulangyu
The 2 square kilometer islet of Gulangyu, off Xiamen’s western shore, is a UNESCO World Heritage site for its eclectic mix of late-Qing and treaty-port colonial architecture. No motor vehicles are permitted.
Trade
Xiamen has been a major Chinese trading port since the Ming dynasty. It was opened to foreign trade as a treaty port in 1842 and designated one of China’s four original Special Economic Zones in 1980.
