A small coral island off the southwest coast of Taiwan, the only coral island among Taiwan's outlying islands, famed for sea turtle encounters.
Geography
Xiaoliuqiu lies about 14 km off the port of Donggang in southwestern Taiwan. The island is composed entirely of uplifted reef limestone, with eroded sea caves, arches, and stacks ringing its 12 km coastline.
Sea Turtles
Green sea turtles forage along the seagrass beds and reefs ringing the island. Snorkelers and divers regularly see dozens in a single outing, making Xiaoliuqiu one of the most reliable turtle-watching sites in Asia.
Vase Rock
The Huaping or “Vase Rock” on the northern shore, a 9 m tall coral stack eroded into a slender stem and bulbous crown, is the island’s iconic landmark.
