A diamond-shaped island off the south coast of England, a popular Victorian-era seaside destination and host of major music festivals.
Geography
The Isle of Wight lies in the English Channel, separated from Hampshire by the Solent strait. The chalk ridge that forms The Needles at the western tip is the same band running through the South Downs.
Royal Connection
Queen Victoria built Osborne House near East Cowes as a seaside retreat from 1845, and she died there in 1901. Visiting yachts at Cowes Week each August remain the highlight of British competitive sailing.
Festivals
The original Isle of Wight Festival in 1970 drew 600,000 people for Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, and The Who. The revived festival has run annually since 2002.
