The largest of the disputed Kuril Islands between Russia and Japan, a chain of nine active volcanoes shrouded in fog and forest.
Geography
Iturup, known in Japan as Etorofu, stretches about 200 km along the southern Kurils between the Pacific and the Sea of Okhotsk. The Atsonupuri stratovolcano on its southern peninsula reaches 1634 m.
Dispute
Japan claims Iturup along with Kunashir, Shikotan, and the Habomais as its Northern Territories, occupied by Soviet forces in 1945. The dispute has prevented signing of a final World War II peace treaty.
Resources
The Kudriavy volcano on Iturup is the only known natural source of pure rhenium mineralization, deposited in fumarolic vents. The island also hosts large salmon and rare earth mineral resources.
