Geography

Java stretches about 1,000 km from west to east. A volcanic spine runs its length, including Mount Semeru at 3676 m, the highest peak, and Mount Merapi, one of the most active volcanoes on Earth.

Cities

The capital Jakarta sits on Java’s northwest coast and anchors a metropolitan region of over 30 million. Surabaya, Bandung, and Semarang are also among Indonesia’s largest cities.

Heritage

Borobudur, a 9th-century Mahayana Buddhist temple in central Java, is the largest Buddhist monument on Earth. Nearby Prambanan, also a UNESCO site, is the country’s largest Hindu temple complex.
