ISLANDS

Jersey

The largest of the Channel Islands, a British Crown Dependency lying just 22 km from the Normandy coast of France.

Geography

Jersey is closer to France than to Britain and is tilted so that the south coast forms a long sandy bay at St Aubin while the north is fringed by tall granite cliffs. Tides among the largest in the world expose vast intertidal flats.

Government

Jersey has its own elected assembly, the States Assembly, and its own legal and tax systems. Although not part of the United Kingdom, it shares the Crown and depends on Britain for defense and foreign affairs.

Occupation

Jersey was the only part of the British Isles occupied by German forces during World War II, from 1940 to 1945. Numerous bunkers and fortifications from the Atlantic Wall remain visible across the island.
