Geography
Jeju formed about two million years ago through volcanic eruption. Hallasan, a dormant shield volcano at 1947 m, is the highest peak in South Korea and the center of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
Lava Tubes
The Geomunoreum lava tube system, including Manjanggul Cave at 8.9 km, is among the longest and most accessible lava tube networks in the world. The system is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Haenyeo
Jeju’s haenyeo, women free-divers who harvest abalone, sea urchins, and conches without breathing equipment, are recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. Most active haenyeo today are over 60 years old.
