Geography
Penang Island sits in the Strait of Malacca off the northwestern Malaysian coast and is connected to the mainland by the 13.5 km Penang Bridge. Penang Hill rises to 833 m near the center of the island.
George Town
George Town, founded by the British East India Company in 1786, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2008 alongside Malacca. Its shophouse rows blend Chinese, Indian, Malay, and European designs.
