ISLANDS

Phuket

Thailand's largest island, a major beach tourism destination at the northern end of the Strait of Malacca.

Geography

Phuket is connected to the southern Thai mainland by the Sarasin Bridge. Its western coast is a long string of sandy beaches, including Patong, Kata, and Karon, while the eastern coast is more rocky and forested.

Tourism

The island became an international tourism destination in the 1980s. Old Town Phuket retains rows of Sino-Portuguese shophouses from the 19th-century tin-mining era.

2004 Tsunami

The Indian Ocean tsunami of December 2004 struck Phuket and killed nearly 300 people on the island. Early warning sirens and evacuation routes have been installed along its western coast since.
