ISLANDS

Reunion

A volcanic French overseas department in the western Indian Ocean, home to one of the world's most active volcanoes and a UNESCO-listed mountainous interior.

Geography

Reunion lies about 200 km southwest of Mauritius. Two great shield volcanoes built the island: the dormant Piton des Neiges at 3070 m and the active Piton de la Fournaise on the southeast coast.

Piton de la Fournaise

The Piton de la Fournaise erupts on average every nine months and is among the most-studied volcanoes on Earth. Most eruptions are confined to the Enclos Fouque caldera and pose little risk to inhabitants.

Cirques

Three vast amphitheater calderas, Cirque de Mafate, Cirque de Salazie, and Cirque de Cilaos, were carved into the flanks of Piton des Neiges. Mafate is accessible only on foot or by helicopter.
