ISLANDS

Roatan

The largest of Honduras's Bay Islands, a long thin Caribbean island lining the world's second-largest barrier reef.

Geography

Roatan stretches roughly 77 km along the southern edge of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. The island is hilly and forested, with reefs and lagoons fringing both coasts.

Diving

Roatan is among the most affordable certification destinations in the Caribbean. Sites including Mary’s Place and the wreck of the El Aguila draw divers year-round, with whale shark encounters off neighboring Utila in season.

Garifuna

The Garifuna people, descended from Carib, Arawak, and West African ancestors, were exiled to Roatan from Saint Vincent by the British in 1797. They later founded settlements across the Caribbean coast of Central America.
