ISLANDS

Saaremaa

The largest island of Estonia, a flat limestone island in the Baltic known for windmills, juniper groves, and a Soviet-era meteorite crater.

Geography

Saaremaa lies west of mainland Estonia across the Suur Strait. The island is largely flat limestone bedrock covered by mixed forest, juniper-rich heathlands, and pastures.

Kaali

The Kaali crater field in central Saaremaa was created by a meteorite impact around 1500 BCE, making it one of the most recent known major Holocene impact events. The largest of nine craters is 110 m wide.

Independence

After 50 years of Soviet rule the island reopened to outside visitors in 1989. Saaremaa now markets itself as a quiet cycling and spa destination, with the capital Kuressaare ringed by its preserved medieval castle.
