ISLANDS

Skye

The largest and northernmost of Scotland's Inner Hebrides, famed for the dramatic Cuillin mountains and Norse-influenced Gaelic culture.

Geography

Skye is connected to the Scottish mainland by the Skye Bridge, opened in 1995. The Cuillin range, comprising the rocky Black Cuillin and the rounded Red Cuillin, dominates the south of the island. Sgurr Alasdair at 992 m is the highest peak.

Geology

The northern peninsulas of Trotternish, Waternish, and Duirinish feature striking basalt landslip features including the Old Man of Storr and the rocky pinnacles of Quiraing.

Visitor Pressure

Skye received about 650,000 visitors a year by the late 2010s, straining roads and parking at honeypot sites. Local councils have promoted alternative trails to reduce concentration on the Fairy Pools and Storr.
