A volcanic Korean island in the East Sea, known for towering basalt cliffs, squid fishing, and the only native pumpkin taffy of Korea.
Geography
Ulleungdo rises steeply from the East Sea about 120 km off the mainland Korean coast. The island is the eroded remnant of a Pliocene volcano; Seonginbong at 984 m is its highest peak.
Fisheries
Squid harvested at night under bright deck lights are Ulleungdo’s most famous catch. Dried Ulleungdo squid is considered the highest grade in Korean cuisine.
Dokdo
Ulleungdo is the closest inhabited Korean island to Dokdo, a pair of small islets 87 km farther east. The two islands are administered together and feature heavily in Korea’s territorial dispute with Japan.
