ISLANDS

Unalaska

A volcanic island in the eastern Aleutian chain of Alaska, home to Dutch Harbor, one of the busiest commercial fishing ports in the United States.

Geography

Unalaska forms part of the Fox Islands group of the Aleutian chain. Makushin Volcano rises to 1800 m at its center and last erupted in 1995. The town of Unalaska sits across Iliuliuk Bay from the port of Dutch Harbor.

Fisheries

Dutch Harbor consistently ranks first or second among U.S. ports by volume of seafood landed, processing more than 350 million kilograms of Alaska pollock, cod, and crab each year.

World War II

Japanese carrier aircraft bombed Dutch Harbor in June 1942 in the only attack on the U.S. mainland during World War II. Remains of bunkers and gun emplacements survive on Mount Ballyhoo above the harbor.
