The smallest and easternmost of Honduras's main Bay Islands, a budget diving hub at the southern end of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef.
Geography
Utila lies about 29 km off the Honduran north coast, west of Roatan. The island is largely flat, with a hilly limestone center, mangrove swamps, and a string of small cays along the southern shore.
Whale Sharks
The deepwater channel north of Utila is one of the few places in the world where whale sharks aggregate year-round. Encounters peak from February to April and August to October.
Diving
Utila has long been one of the cheapest dive certification destinations in the Western Hemisphere. Dozens of dive shops operate from the East Harbor settlement, the only town on the island.
