ISLANDS

Vis (Island)

A small Croatian island in the central Adriatic, the farthest inhabited Croatian island from the mainland and a former Yugoslav military zone.

Geography

Vis lies about 55 km off the Dalmatian coast, beyond Hvar and Brac. Hum, at 587 m on the western tip, is the highest point. The Blue Cave on neighboring Bisevo islet is reachable by small boat through a narrow opening.

Closed Island

Vis was off-limits to foreign visitors from 1944 until 1989 because Yugoslav authorities used it as a strategic military base, including underground submarine pens at Komiza.

Mamma Mia

The 2018 film “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” used Vis as the principal stand-in for the fictional Greek island of Kalokairi, increasing the island’s profile among tourists.
