ISLANDS

Victoria Island

A massive island in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, the eighth-largest island in the world, split between Nunavut and the Northwest Territories.

Geography

Victoria Island sits west of King William Island and southeast of Banks Island, separated from the Canadian mainland by Coronation Gulf. The terrain is gently rolling lowland tundra and shallow lake basins.

Communities

The settlements of Cambridge Bay on the southeast coast and Ulukhaktok on the west coast are the only inhabited communities. Together they hold about 2,200 residents, mostly Inuinnait.

Wildlife

The island is one of the strongholds of the Peary caribou, a small Arctic subspecies, and supports muskoxen, Arctic foxes, and a small population of grizzly bears at its southern edge.
