Geography
Vancouver Island stretches roughly 460 km long and 80 km wide between the Strait of Georgia and the open Pacific. The Vancouver Island Ranges form its rugged spine, with the Golden Hinde reaching 2195 m.
Forests
The west coast hosts some of the world’s tallest stands of Sitka spruce, western red cedar, and Douglas fir. Cathedral Grove on the Cameron River contains trees over 800 years old.
Indigenous Nations
About 50 First Nations of the Coast Salish, Nuu-chah-nulth, and Kwakwakawakw groups have lived on Vancouver Island for at least 8,000 years. Their potlatch traditions are central to the island’s culture.
