A cluster of four high islands in the Federated States of Micronesia, famous for stone money disks and traditional thatched meeting houses.
Geography
The four high islands of Yap proper — Yap, Gagil-Tomil, Maap, and Rumung — are connected by causeways and ring a shallow lagoon. Some 130 outer islands in the Yap State stretch eastward almost to Chuuk.
Rai Stones
Yapese rai stone money disks, quarried in Palau and ferried home by canoe, can measure up to four meters across. The history of each stone, not its physical possession, conveys its monetary value.
Diving
The waters off Mil Channel host one of the world’s most reliable populations of manta rays. Yap was one of the first dive destinations to promote manta encounters as a year-round attraction.
