ISLANDS

Yonaguni

The westernmost inhabited island of Japan, lying close to Taiwan, known for hammerhead shark dives and a mysterious underwater rock formation.

Geography

Yonaguni lies about 108 km east of Taiwan and 509 km west of mainland Okinawa. The island is roughly 10 km long with steep cliffs along its southern coast and broad terraced fields inland.

Underwater Monument

Divers in 1986 discovered a series of stepped rock platforms about 25 m below sea level off the south coast. Whether these are natural sandstone formations or a partly built ancient structure remains debated.

Diving

The waters around Yonaguni host wintering schools of hammerhead sharks. Divers regularly encounter groups of several dozen scalloped hammerheads between November and May.
