Zakynthos

A southern Ionian island of Greece, famed for Navagio shipwreck beach, sea turtles, and the resort coasts of Laganas Bay.

Geography

Zakynthos lies in the southern Ionian Sea between Kefalonia and the Peloponnese. Mount Vrachionas at 758 m forms the mountainous western backbone, while the eastern half of the island is gently sloping farmland.

Navagio Beach on the western coast features the rusting wreck of the smuggler ship Panagiotis, which ran aground in 1980. The white limestone cove is accessible only by sea.

Turtles

The sandy beaches around Laganas Bay, including Sekania, are the most important nesting sites for the loggerhead sea turtle Caretta caretta in the Mediterranean. The National Marine Park of Zakynthos was established in 1999.
