ISLANDS

Zealand

The most populous Danish island, home to Copenhagen and connected to Sweden by the Oresund Bridge.

Geography

Zealand lies between the Kattegat to the north and the Baltic Sea to the south. The Great Belt Bridge links Zealand to Funen and the Jutland Peninsula, while the Oresund Bridge connects it to Malmo in Sweden.

Copenhagen

The Danish capital Copenhagen sits on the east coast of Zealand and parts of Amager. The Greater Copenhagen metropolitan area is home to over two million residents.

Hamlet

Kronborg Castle at Helsingor inspired the setting of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” as Elsinore. The Renaissance fortress controlled traffic through the Oresund strait and collected sound dues until 1857.
