A semi-autonomous Tanzanian archipelago in the Indian Ocean, historic center of the Swahili-Arab spice trade and slave routes.
Geography
The Zanzibar Archipelago consists of two main islands, Unguja and Pemba, plus dozens of smaller islets. Unguja, often called Zanzibar Island, is the largest and most populous; Pemba is hillier and famed for its clove plantations.
Stone Town
Stone Town, the historic core of Zanzibar City on Unguja, is a UNESCO World Heritage site for its blend of Swahili, Arab, Persian, Indian, and European architectural traditions.
Spice Trade
Zanzibar dominated the East African clove trade in the 19th century. The Omani Sultanate moved its capital from Muscat to Zanzibar in 1840, marking the height of the island’s commercial power.
