A small Brazilian island off Sao Paulo state, also called Snake Island, infamous for hosting one of the world's densest populations of pit vipers.
Geography
Queimada Grande lies about 33 km off the coast of Sao Paulo state. The island covers only 43 hectares and is a mix of bare rock, grasslands, and rainforest cleared for failed banana plantations a century ago.
Golden Lancehead
The island is the entire world range of Bothrops insularis, the golden lancehead pit viper. Density estimates have ranged from one snake every meter to roughly 2,000 to 4,000 adults in total.
Access
Visits are prohibited under Brazilian law except for biologists with special permits. The Brazilian Navy maintains the lighthouse remotely.
