ISLANDS

Quirimbas

A chain of 32 mostly coral islands along the northern coast of Mozambique, protected within a national park renowned for sea life and Swahili ruins.

Geography

The Quirimbas Archipelago stretches roughly 250 km north of Pemba in Cabo Delgado province. Ibo, Quirimba, and Matemo are inhabited; many of the southern islands are uninhabited reef islets.

Quirimbas National Park

The park, declared in 2002, protects mangroves, sea grass beds, and fringing reefs supporting sea turtles, dugongs, and humpback whales during the southern winter.

Ibo Island

Ibo retains ruins of Portuguese fortresses, an 18th-century stone town, and a tradition of intricate silverwork. It was a major Swahili trading hub before becoming a Portuguese colonial outpost.
