A remote Yemeni island in the Arabian Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage site whose otherworldly endemic flora includes the umbrella-shaped dragon's blood tree.
Geography
Socotra lies about 240 km east of the Horn of Africa and 380 km south of mainland Yemen. The interior Haggier Mountains rise to 1503 m and intercept enough moisture to support pockets of cloud forest.
Flora
Roughly a third of Socotra’s plant species are endemic. The dragon’s blood tree Dracaena cinnabari, with its umbrella crown and red sap, is the most iconic. Frankincense and the cucumber tree are also abundant.
Conservation
The Socotra Archipelago became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2008. Ongoing Yemeni civil war and Emirati involvement on the island since 2018 have raised concerns about environmental governance.
