A teardrop-shaped island in the Indian Ocean off the southeastern tip of India, known for tea, ancient Buddhist sites, and biodiversity hotspots.
Geography
Sri Lanka lies in the Indian Ocean separated from the southeastern coast of India by the shallow Palk Strait. The Central Highlands rise to Pidurutalagala at 2524 m and form a wet zone receiving the bulk of monsoon rainfall.
Tea
The British planted Camellia sinensis on Sri Lanka in the 1860s after coffee blight devastated existing plantations. Ceylon tea remains a major export, with Nuwara Eliya and Dimbula among the most prestigious growing regions.
Heritage
Eight cultural and natural UNESCO World Heritage sites span the island, including the ancient capitals of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, the rock fortress of Sigiriya, and Sinharaja Forest Reserve.
