ISLANDS

Sumatra

The sixth-largest island in the world, the westernmost of Indonesia's Greater Sundas, defined by volcanoes, rainforest, and Lake Toba.

Geography

Sumatra stretches roughly 1,790 km from northwest to southeast. The Barisan Mountain range runs along its western length, and Mount Kerinci at 3805 m is the highest volcano in Indonesia.

Lake Toba

Lake Toba in northern Sumatra is the world’s largest volcanic lake, occupying the caldera of the supervolcanic Toba eruption of about 74,000 years ago. The eruption is considered one of the most violent of the past few million years.

Wildlife

Sumatra is the only island where tigers, orangutans, rhinos, and elephants still coexist. All four species are critically endangered.
